Why does the Redskin face the other way now?

The Redskin is actually reversable in certain situations. If it were to be used on the football helmets for instance, it would look forward on both sides to mirror the player inside. The reason the Redskin faces to the right is because it creates less visual tension to the viewer when paired with the type marks. We read left to right, so it is visually more appealing for the Redskin to look in that same direction. This also keeps him inline with the spear which faces eastward. It's one of those things most people won't realize, but it is present.

Why not use an old fashioned block W?

While there are many schools who do just that, it does not say anything about what Wapakoneta represents nor does it set it apart from the pack at all. It's the standard fallback, which is great if you don't have a logo or a brand because it then identifies you as collegiate. Having your own unique system catered to express everything your school represents is far superior.
